representation in britain soaps and Print

Representation means what is shown on media to the audience. For examples in soaps or newspapers showsw what type of genre characters are shown in their storylines and their characteristics in either a positive or negative way and types of people are written about in the paper i.e celebrities tabloids) and politicians (more broadsheet types of paper).
The media is represented and are shown in many way either in positive ways or nagative. Some repesentation  in soaps is about who is not shown. For example the soap Hollyoaks has been slated many times to be foucsing on teenagers and not having any character above the age of 30 in major storylines. Eastenders has also been critisised lately as the current producer Bryan Kirkwood is focusing alot more on teenage storylines more than any other producer has.

When  Coronation Street began in 1960, most characters were in working class condition. They were shown mainly as older female, white characters. They were represented as a man's point of view for women. for example standing around gossiping about one another. If females in those were represented like this in those days would be class as sexism or stereotypical and for featuring a lack of diversity .
In the those days of Coronation Street, a typical issue might be a woman living in the same house as a man but not being married. In the early days when Coronation Street began, this was a real life issue because it was forbidden in those days as the social value of britain were different to what they are now.
Im this video shows women being represented.

.
In 2010, they are looking many different types of issues that they would never have even looked at 50 years ago as it was seen as not 'politically correct' and 'wrong'. Nowdays, the producers look at homosexuality as an issue in all the 4 main UK soap(eastenders, coronation street, emerdale and hollyoaks. In the olden days the issue they had then is now resolved and part of every day life as many couples do live together unmarried in real life and soap life. Coronation Street has been recently blasted for having too many gay characters, but fans have been fighting back on forums saying it's being true to life.. The audience are activly engaging in this scene, because they will think about whether they have the same views or disagree with Elieen Grimshaw as she talks about her son and his new boyfriend coming to stay on coronation street.  aIso the next scene it involves another gay character in Coronation Street, Sean Tully going to London to visit his son. The programe is trying to entertain viwers by feeding them the stereotype of an openly but overly gay man. When comparing Sean to the other gay character Todd, Todd has an undetectable sexuality compared to Sean. This is classed as juxtaposition which means placing together two different characters to lead the audience to comparision.
In another scene involving a gay female muslim character, Amber was caught by her father kissing another girl and her father is disgusted. This shows how different religions react to homosexuality. A similar story has also appeared in Eastenders as Syed Masood who is a gay muslim has struggled with how his family, especially his mum and dad took the news. In Eastenders the storyline of Syed Masood being gay trying to create realism. THey want to create social issues. It shows that you wouldn't expect a muslim male being gay. Its trying to explore real issues.

The place is represented in eastenders in london because of the cities in london. Plus it represents Birtain and it is distingish to them. Eastenders titles background is the river thames and these are all distictive in London and represent Braint. They are known about this in the soap. Britain is diversed because of what it used to be to what is now is completely different. Soaps before wouldn't even think about talking contriversial storylines but for example eastenders talk about so many so many storyline such as rape, violence and many more. THey like to explore different storyline.

Individual and social group

In newspaper some individuals are represented in certain ways. It depends on certain article but some people could represented negativly or positively way. However it depends on the way they get represented and it would be different if they get represented in a mass collection. However the paper decides on the way they are being represented. Article can affect individual people by talking about in natural disaster storyline. This will make the audience feel sympathy towards them. Also with target audience they would want to aim story lines at them so that it would relate to them or find in interesting. Also it would aim  at certain soical groups so that they can discuss the story through word of mouth. An example of a social group would be the teenagers or the young youths. Newspaper layout would make that it suit there needs with the text and images so that they can inderstand. Also they want article that they would find interesting and also learning something from the aritcle. An example of this  the issue of the wooldwich murder http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22698196. The woolwich media coverage contributes to creating an extremist stereotype of religious people which passive and less critical spectators .

issues and place
Newspapers like to talk about many storylines such as racism, violence, descrimination because they think its an interesting topic and they want the viewers discussion on the topic and see what they have think about the articles. These are all interesting  topic and they know that viewers are interested in the topic so these are article the newpaper would put up. However they need to extra careful when putting these article so that it doesn't offend anyone and make them feel upset in any way. So they need to considerate when putting up these storyline. There are particulr laws on censorship that newspaper can put certain sotryline because it would be offending too many people and they could make several complaints about the newspaper. However newspaper print different stories evereyday just because of what is going on around the world. News cahnge daily like they can be talking about moral issues one day and talking about a tottally different storyline the next. Its what people interests are. The example of this is that http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-19756698
Ethical codes are important because it sets a boundary in terms of what can responsibly be published and broadcast. Ethical codes are intended to protect the public from potentially offensive or inflammatory material.

stereotypes
stereotype is A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Stereotype is used in newspaper every singe day. Its one of the biggest complaints they always in the newspaper company when having articles. Newspaper companies have to be careful when having articles that has stereotypes because they could be offending someone which they shouldn't be. The main stereotypes storyline is teenager because they mainly stereotype them in a negative way. For example theyll thereoy type in a way that they are bullies and gang violence. They are represented in many negative ways. There are many other stereotypes but sadly these are all stereotypes of bad image instead of having a stereotypes of a good image. But newspaper find it more interesting publishing stereotypes of bad stereotypes and they find it more easier to publish a stories with a group of people together in a bad way. People reoresent young people as them taking drugs and reoresent them in taking drugs. People represents in a bad way because of the media, THey always have bad stories about them. This is an example of stereotypes of younger people in the media.
