Elements

Colour

In soaps they used to black and white and then they developed into using a variety of colours. The reason that it shows meaning in soap is that they show the different colours that people are wearing which shows the type of genre the character is and also to make it more interesting to watch with all the colours. Having colours in the soaps sets the tone of the show. As you can see in this video of EastEnders  the colours set the tone of the episode and it connotes the emotion they are feeling. In this soap you can see that the colours set the tone of the multi cultural scene. You represent the asian culture with cuisine and spice and the tone of the picture reflects it and  shows the represetnion of multi cultural. The colour is beige, straw colour which it reflects on the sub-saharan colour of the environments of the characters ancestors.

In both tabloid and broadsheets there are colour although they started in black and white. The reason that it shows meaning is so that it makes it more interesting to read because if it was in plain black and white with little or no colour it would be bring to read. It would be less visually attracting. People tend to buy the newspaper if they have a iconic image and bright colours. The picture sets the tone of the news paper. in this newspaper you can see how the colours affect the newspaper and how the viewers will. As you can see that the newspaper is putting the celbrity in a good light with the bright colours. This put bright colour which sets the tone of the news paper and the view who will read the newspaperMajority news paper uses main colours Black, white and red. Atthough  these colour are usually,  but it doesnt mean that they have to. some newspapers use different colours but it does look important if they are those colours. The contrast of the colour white title on the black background makes it stand out and makes it more outstanding for the people to red. Also shows good preasentation for their reputation. The sun has vibrant colours with the top half of bright blue and red. But underneath the colour changes dramatically because the newspaper changes since the text shows dramatic soryline. THere is another example of the guardian before and after. The colour afterwards is bright colour of blue which distinctive and yellow. THe before newspaper was black and white and looks bland.  The blue colour  of the garudian  newspaper is intellectual, communication, trust, calm and efficiency.

Language

In soaps they use language to show where different people are from and there originality which makes them. For example Zainab Massod in Eastenders who was originally from Pakistan speaks with a slight accent which shows her efnicity and where her culture is. Having different language shows the ethnic group. Also they have cockney accent to show the accent in Britain in the olden days. Easters actors are known for Cockney accent. It shows the represention of brithish. In this clip before you can see the language and how it represents the actors from the ethnic group as well as the britishness.
Language is quite alot which helps the meaning for the target audience to use this for their interperation.they use this for their interperation on words and charchter which can be entertainment. Also this would help for newspapers and soaps. this is  because they would use this for their target market, for example they would use short sentences for lower class instead paragraphs for higher class. Cockney represen scirocco economic class and status of london of the east end.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIG1cUME9PA - You can hear  the character billeys cockney language which represents the british qualities.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpUVt0CvxRE - Rrepresents  the ethnic background. You can hear zainabs accents which represent the multicultural society.

In both tabloid and broadsheets they use different types of language. Tabloid newspapers use more informal language to  appeal to a less illiterate, less intellectual readership. while broadsheets use more formal register and more complex structure and lexis to appeal to a more educated, more intelligent and more intellectual readership . The lanuage represents what the newspaper is. For example if the newspaper has long words with less texts then it shows that its for the older since they will be able to understand. in the picture below you will see a paper with lots of text and the one with more images. The younger peope will tend to read the one with bigger text and more images since its visually appealing for them and plus they can uderstand more than the one that has more texts. The newspaper sets which people are more compatiable with the newspaper
 - the guardian is more aimed at students, intellectual people since the newspaper has long, complicated words.(interactive, misunderstanding, concerns, outrages.)

 - The sun newspaper have large text, they're complicated people may find it more understandable

Text

In soaps there is text in the opening of the soaps to show the reprentation of them and to show what the soap is called.  This distinctive tittles clearly represent the famous region of london. They have a title sequence in the beggining of the soap to show the soap represenation. Also in eastenders in the openning sequence they have a massive title with the river thames as the background. This is what distitive about Britain and puts them in the  represention. The title of the soap shows what the soap is called. They also have credits at thenend which all soaps have explaing who the actors are and who the producers. This is at the end of the soap. This is must for all TV shows to explain who the directors and who is the actors of the film or documentary.  in the lettering of the title letter of tradition of small letter t which looks old and traditional, Traditional typography and it looks old and traditional. reflecting the traditional values of the east end and which is long part of their heritage, a long standing and much valued are of the capitals heritage.

In both tabloid and broadsheets text is the main use of this. this is because people read the texts for information. The text of the newspaper respresent who the people are. For example students who are well educated will be more interested in reading broadsheet because they want to know is going on the outsider world. but the people are less educated are more interested in Tabloids because comparing them to tabloids is much more simpler, has less complicated words, they have huge tittles more images, its a lot more easier for them. Howether the text of the paper is important because more broadsheet they use long text since they know the readers will understand the papers. But with the tabloid they would use catchy slogans so keep the less intellectual people intruiged and keep them interested in whats going on the newspapers. This is an example of the broadsheet and as you can see it has the title which people want to know whats going on and want to read it. Also having lots of picture breaks up the text for the less intellectual Also you can see the tabloid of the gaurdian. Its  very recognisable as it has the font which represents them. Its posh and high standered. Its shows that people more of a higher status reads the newspaper. Plus it has longer texts and less text which could represent people more higher would be understanding this paper. As you can see in the 3 newspaper the times is a lot more simple. It has the traditional background go black and white.

The times newspaper is designed for the traditional times. Its for the higher class, older class people. Its a lot more traditional the the sun and the gaurdian. with media, size picture.  Its very old traditional times and classic.  The text of the newspaper is not aimed for the less intellectual as it uses traditional words such as, praising, fortunate. The text of the newspaper is small size however it is readable for the readers,

The sun newspaper is round and has red, white and black. You can see what is distinctive with the newspaper and see the difference between them. The sun creates a more simple typography with a reader who wants no thrill. use a lot of capital for the less literate attentions. The text of the newpspaer is big and aimed at the less intellectual, the text are understandable for the less intellects. The have cathy and entertaining text to keep them entertained.

The guardian looks modern with the blue and white. THe blue represents intellectual which is aimed for them. The higher class, the people who will understand the newspaper . Th texts of the newspaper is more understandable for the highly intellegants.

Music.

In soaps music is used for a lot of different things. The theme tune happens in the beginning and is catchy so that they identifiable to loyal fans of the programme. also sound affects are used quite alot for dramtic scenes and make it more interesting for people to watch. The soaps have a opening tune which represents the show. So when you hear the opening tune you will be easy to recognise which soap it is. For example the eastenders tune is easy to recognise due to the theme tune. Also the soaps have dramatic sound affect to axplain and action and give cohearence between shots. These are trying to create a dramatic affect. As you can see in eastenders the voices of the actors represents the actors and their ethinice gorup. Its also identifys the programme. If the voice are talking to eacher like a conversation than you can recgnnise that its a soap

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNKvdbzCOzU - Theme tune of eastenders. To e a true cockney supposodly you h=need to have been born in the sound of bow bells  And these have become synonymous with cockney carachters. The bells used in the compisiton of the eastenders theme music convey this connection between bow bells and cockneys

In tabloids they sometimes have the TOP 40 to ataract the younger audience and try to engage them more. In broadsheets they don't as such since music is more for entertainment.  CD's given away in supplements since music cant be in a publication form Musical can be used in a wrttien form. For examample the times musical. Also lyrics for music can be a form as well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVySc2Qu3WI - Introducing the guardian
The music uses the guardian by being more formal. The music identifies the programme of news programme. It has loud bangs to get the audience intrigued and gives coherence between shots. its creating emotion of alerting us to be affected by the guardian newspaper. The newspaper wants to create a reaction by the loud soundtrack. Its causing alerting reaction.

Sound Effects

In soaps the use sound effects for a lot of different reasons. One reason is that if someone is going to slap another person they can use a clap sound to make the slap more realistic. also they want to make a dramatic affect as well as realism to engage them to watch the soap.
In both the tabloid and the broadsheets newspapers they don't use sound effects because it is not needed. Having sound affect explains the action for the programme. For example if you know that the person is shouting in eastender. It explains the actions of them being angry. It gives cohearence between shots and reinforces emotion. This will increase more views if its doing off these actions. If the sound afffect does these than it attracts the audience. This an example of eastenders of their sound affects

Also having these sound affect gives the viewers to explains the action. THey ccan write reviews about the sound effects and they can critiquie the sound. For example they can say that the sound doesn't explain action or confues to what its meant to do . This is an example of the people of coronation street. but the sound affect. This is an episode of the eastenders having good sound affect. They are explaining action and giving cohearence between shots \Also this explain the emtion

Images

In soaps images are used people who are in pictures of relatives of the people who are in the soap. they use images to catch people eye like if they use good looking people, the audience are more likely to watch as such. Images represent the people fo who they are. For example the people who wear glasses you would think that they are a student or younng. Also the images makes people stereo type to someone who they may not be. Thats why eastenders like making so many different storylines because they work with the stereo types and try to make them out someone there no. Also having someone look sinister is going to creat an unsettling feeling. Or having having someone who is beautiful will make you want to watch the programme. For example in hollyoaks they are known for having good looking casts so thats why there views increases. THis is be causes its a feeling of someone you want to be. In

The  closely pact of narrow terrast of northern street of manchester and the intimate working class market settings of the east end are iconograhoc images which communicate important information about the socio economic status of the human demographics of these regions. Each is working class, each is lower economic, each is a environment of hard manual work, long working and fiancial struggle and accompanying these are themes and issue such as economic depression, unemployment, family strains relating to lack of funds, poor education.

In tabloids and broadsheets they use images to show different people who are in the main headlines. The reason for this is to show the readers what they look like. they also use this to be informative and so the audience might help to understand or relate in these images. Also somenewspaper have large images and seeing the images set the tone of the picture. For example this picture of the missing girl will give a feeling  sensitivity and would give a sympaphy feeling. Also its sets the tone of the paper. Also you see this paper of the Kate Middle getting married would give a happy feeling because she iconic and people want to relate to her. The pciture of the gaurdian makes us feel sympothentical because of the close up of the estranged of the children
The child's puppy like eyes appeal to more of sentimental reader and the close up is used for emotional affect. In the cast of kate who is shown hr perfect look of her status.

The pciture of the gaurdian makes us feel sympothentical because of the close up of the estranged of the children. The image is more artistic is taking the texture of the background. Its very artistically taken compared to the the tabloid appealing to people who apperciate art photography.

Performers
In soaps the use performers so that they can portray the characters which have been written in the script. also for entertainment to try and atract the audience to watch the soap. THis is an in eastenders of peggy (Barber Winsor). She is an iconic figure and is very well known. She portrays the images of being a bar maid of the queens pub. She is well known in the soap. People will recognise and she make eastenders so distinguish. This is an example of her in the soap as she is very well knwon from the views and having a well knwon performer means more viewers and makes the soap so distinguish. The actress Barbera Windsor is an English actress. Her best known roles are in theCarry On films and as Peggy Mitchell in the BBC soap opera EastEnders. What makes her such a popular characther  ebcaue she became a household name through the carry one films.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/eastenders/peggys_theme.jpg

In tabloids and broadsheets they have iconic figure to write the figure. THey like to write about the performers because they are iconic figures. THey can look as iconic figure. THey know people will read about them and they will be fascinated about. THis is to increase viewership. Also another well known performer is Peter Bradshaw s a British writer and film critic. He is very well known for what he does and he is known to be a performer. He's got a loyal follower and they trust him at what he does well. He bring more viewers because of his he is del know and has a high status.Richard Littlejohn is closest a newspaper has to a television personality . This makes him known as a   television performer. He is an English author, broadcaster and journalist. He currently writes a twice-weekly column for the Daily Mail. He as well is very known for what he does well.

Costumes
Soaps -
Costumes are used in soaps to identify the charachter. For example the more expensive clothes a character wear you can represent them in higher class and someone who has a lot of money. ALso another example would be if someone wears like sweats or tracksuit, they represent them as someone who is council estate or having a low status. In eastenders the character Ian Beal is represented as low status as the way he dressed in poor clothes. This creates meaning of how he was homeless because of his last wife took all of his money. This shows the state he lived. He is wearing lots of layers of clothes because he lived on the street, he hasn't cleaned him.
Shabby overcoat, layers of old shirts, moth eaten cap. Lack of self care. The meaning that these words are creating is that he can't look after himself, he is poor and helpless. he looks like he is on his own and is helpless. These are connoting a sympathy feeling towards because of the way he looks helps and has no one to turn to.

Print -
Costumes are represented in print of the era it was in . for example Having picture of someone wearing traditional old clothes you can see what era they are from. Also the writers can be representative to be smart and intellectual. The costumes gives a purpose such as wearing a suit gives a purpose that they are doing work and being organised.
In this picture of the Sun newspaper of David Cameron and his wife wearing smart clothes. They look very positive and happy go the picture that its connoting. The costume is connoting, bright, cleanliness, bold, smart, happy. These are what the picture connotes. Cameron wearing blue tie is a symbolic colour of the Tories colour. His wife costume of violet blue us closed to the conservative colours.

However with the Guardian, the costumes is very fashionable as this person is an artist and has an eye for style. The picture connotes dark, sophisticated, organised. This creates meaning of her being an artist with the clothes she is wearing. She looks sophisticated and smart and unique, artistically dress but with a sense  of refine alternative fashion. She dressed in stylish fashion with the brace you can see that she works with material she has and makes it unique about her.

Props

Print -
Props are used many was in print, they can be used to gain attention, give more layers of meaning in the article and images.  They are not really a main feature but it does give massive affect. For example the picture of the queen holding the flowers gives a positive feel. Its a strong picture and gives feeling of sympathy as well. However the picture of the sun newspaper of helen flannagen of holding a gun to her head was misinterpreted and took offensive to the picture. THe picture of her with the gun was her meaning of how bad of hangover was. However it was misinterpreted to the school shooting that happened during this time. The picture is connoting an after affect go her hangover however it was misunderstood of the us shooting and was reacted by the public in a bad way. This is an example of the guardian of helen flannagen having the gun to her head. Comparing the garudian to the sun, the guardian is exampliaing the article, it has more complicated words such as apologising profusely and describing the image as hackneyed imagery. However the sun has big title and referring her as brainless. Its emotive and reflecting her in a bad way. The framing of the article in the guardian is much more desecrate and the framing of the sun is much more crude and shows of evereything

Soaps is also used in props, which can drive attention and gives layers of meaning. For example a character of reading the magazine in morning gives the meaning that she is busy, and occupying her time. Also in Eastenders the props lauren drinking alcohol connotes that she needs help. She is depressed and looking for sympathy in the drink bottle. The picture connotes of her being depressed and she is helpless.

Mise-en-scene
In soaps they use mise-en-scene so that the soap looks realistic. they use miese-en-scene for many reason as such. for example they use it to dress the charachter for their specific genre. Also it could relate to the audience. for example in eastenders they have pubs (the queens head) this is what is distingusih in eastenders and representds them to how they are. Also haveing a cafe represents the eastenders because it has been there for many years and is know very well in the sopa. these are objects that recognise the soap. THe interior set of the queens vic has intimate lighting, traditional times. Its a place where people can socialise and meet new people. Its has traditional colours of west of red and brown. This is connoting the traditional times in london. The room connotes a warm feeling and the hearth feel and thats  that its easy environment.

In tabloids and broadsheets they have mise-en-scene  such as describing the iconic figure such as london.
The mise- en-scene of the london riot in the guardian shows the traffic and distraught that had happened. The picture shows the after effect of the london riots and cause that left it such as the traffics and damage of the people. The guardian is showing the sympathy affect. The sensational effect of the picture  shows the affect of the disaster. The red colour connotes emergency and alerting someone of trouble. The alarm connotes troubles and with the blue is connoting help warning. Its try to aim to grab attention and the blue van is line with the red tarmac. This also connotes that there is helping a dangerous act. The trash on the road in the image informing the people of the damage that has been left. The imagery fixes the text and the text fixes the image with the headline Terror and showing the writing and the wreck of the bus.

The mise-en-scene on The sun of the lighting of the explosion of the london riots looks bright. The picture is connoting danger and shows the dramatic affect of the london riots. The mis-en-scene of the sun is creating en emotion which is the  main purpose. Comparing the sun to the guardian mise-en-scene the sun is much more graphical since its showing the explosion.  The sensational aspects of the image is that it stands out with the fire against the man in the hoodies. You would represent the guy who lived london and people would stereo type with him living in london. It has a cool background and then shows the impact of the fire. THe miss-en-scene of the misty smoke blends in with the fire colour. THe colour of the bright orange and red is connoting danger and warning. The colour red is trailing out connotes death and the costume of the man is connoting an investigation scene. THis showing dramatic affect and has the impact on the consumers.
