Effects on audio visual and print

Trends in consumption
Audio Visual: Since soaps meets the viewers demands and interested,, they get more popular day by day; that why soaps are more available now before they used  to be because of the demand met and the popular its been. For example soaps are available on-line on catch up like EastEnders is available on BBC iplayer and coronation street and emerdale are available to catch up on ITV player. Also hollyoaks is available to catch up on on 4OD. These are all ways that soaps can be cached up on if the viewers fail to miss the epsidoe of soap or if they want to watch it again. Also other countries can watch on-line as well as recording on TV. Also soaps do so well in rating they even decide to spin off shows such as E20 which is aimed at the younger audience. Different channels explores many ways to increase viewer ship such as dramatic storyline. For example the EastEnders storyline of the baby swap. Even they got many complaints, they still want viewer ship to increase. However finding storyline to try and get attention on the viewer ship is difficult thats why eastender is one of the dramatic soap since they have so many storyline such as the baby swap. Also the viewers interests change everey single day so they need to make sure the soaps storylines are recent and that will interest people. However eastenders is knwon for the dramatic storyline they do get many complain but this gets higher rating. Thats one of the reason why like to explore contreversial storyline's because the effects it has afterwards.

Print - even though Print and soaps are different, they both still want to meet the viewers demand and interest so thats why they also tp explore many different storyline as well. Also there are different ways of people reading the newspaper such as online subscription, tablet and kindle, phone apps  and many more. Also reading online and with the technology is better than wasting wasting newspaper evereysing day. They also want to keet the readers keen with the storyline as well. Thats why the higher the rating the newspaper gets is the amont of viewers they get reading the news. They also rely on advertising for this as well to try and get more viewership. study shows that the sun newspaper is more popular than the gaurdian news. However this is all due to people of interests of supplements. THe sun news paper is the biggest newspaper in the world. Howether its changing because they want to charge money for this. So The sun wants to start charging more money because they getting hugh well knwon.

Influence on individual people/mass audience

Audio visual - Audience can be affected either individually or as a mass like for example the EastEnders storyline of the baby swap. This caused an affects to a mass of audience because many of them thought it was to dramatic and wrong. Like EastEnders and many other soap when they have dramatic storyline it will cause an affect either good or bad or even both. That's what the soaps want to create viewer ship so thats why have so many dramatic storyline because it will get people talking about the storyline. However the viewers can reacts to these storyline in many ways such as complaints, protest or even praising the soaps. These are what the viewers may do if they have been affected by the storyline  However soap needs to know they're limits even though they want to create an affect on the audience, they need to make sure that they dont go over board because it can be offensive to certain people and they might feel upset by or be treated unfairly because of these storyline  However soaps wants to create realism so they want to explore real life issues which a positive affect on the storyline such as abuse like rape or bullying and how to overcome it. .There are many dramatic storyline such as baby in EastEnders, transsexual storyline is hollyoaks and many more.

Print - Also like soaps, newspapers need to be care when they are publishing certain storyline since it isn't offensive to anyone or being treated unfairly because of it. Thats why the articles they publish has to be unbiased  For example when articles talk about teenager being bad and causing violence, this would give a bad representation of teen and people will feel intimated by them when they could be nice. This also an example of stereotyping. Newspaper also needs to be considerate when publishing storyline because of this reason. Also with soaps the viewers can reacts to the newspaper if they get an certain affect such as complaint, protest or even prainsing them. Howether newspaper rely on the socres or information given to them thats why they're infulence can give an negative since the sources might have the wrong information and they are framing someone who is completely innocent. Thats why newspaper are needs to be considerate when publishing cetertain articel

positive affects
Audio Visual - In soaps the affects on the viewers can be vaired from good or bad or even both. the good affects on the soap is that they explore issues that people suffer from eversing days like for example the bipolar storyline in eastenders. People can learn from it and understand from the storlyline and realte to it. In terms of this it does have a good affect.  The viewers can relate to these storyline since they have been through be it before and can understand from it.  Another example of the storyline is lauren drinkings problem in eastender. THis is what people can relate to espically the teenager because so many underage teenager like to have fun and drink lots of alchol. But this shows the after affect of her drinking problem and espically for the parents can learn from it and see how to deal with their children. Thats why the actors praise these storyline because its what people suffer through it.

Print - Also with newspaper article's it can give a positive affect as they can talk about real life issues as well such as people who have been suffering bullying and what they did overcome it. Also people who have been suffering from ill related disease such as cancer and talks about the affect on them and how they lived day by day. In these cases it can cause a positive affect by people relating the issues and can learn from it. Also they can use this advertising by trying to get awarenes and as well as informing them. There are many positive ways that newspaper can create an affect and can help people with there everyday life. People can praise these article and they can be well known from this.

negative affects

Audio visual-  Even though soaps can cause positive affects with real life issue, it mainly does create more naegative issues than positive affects. This is because they go out of bound and wants to and create tension in the soaps. Its wether how the viewers feel about the soap and wever they want to make a complaint or not because of this. Viewers do tend to overreact the dramatic storyline but it is what the soap does afterwards with the storyline wether they carry on or just stop it completely. But it is completely natural that we the viewer over react in storylines when it is completly fiction. For example the baby swap storyline in EastEnders  even though it was completly wrong and the charties who deal with these storline got so many complaints. Even though it is fiction. Its just something that people dont see in real life. This storyline created a negative affects on the soaps and there are many more.  The stroyline of the baby swap in eastenders had to be resolved because of the dramatic complaints they got. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7jZKnHRPp. THis is a link of the tragic storyline it got so tragic storyline even the actress had to leave due to this storyline.

Print - Newspapers can have many negative affects espically in tabloids newspaper. This can result in ruining in people's lives such as celebrities. They like to to put negative storyline about the celebrities because they like an reaction between them. The reason why ruin they're career is because they can't handle what the newpaper say about them. This is a corrupt affect on the media ruining the celebrity and causes such as negative affect on them when its actually false on the celebrities. This ruins their lives and ruins their families and childrens as well. So this deffinetly creaste a huge negative affects.

Copycat violence is when a person who mimics a previous crime that they have seen even through the media or described in fiction. AN example of this that the storine of the woolwich murder. A so-called 'revenge attack' on a mosque was imitated as the story led to an increased feeling of anger towards the muslim community as a result of bias and stereotyping . Copycat theory relies the audience being easily influenced and incensed by the message they receive and that they make a blanket judgement on the social group involved.

Elements

Denotation and connationAn idea or feeling that a word invokes for a person in addition to its literal or primary meaning.

iconography  - The visual images, symbols, or modes of representation collectively associated with a person, cult, or movement.

linear -Arranged in or extending along a straight or nearly straight line: "linear arrangements" Soaps is where a film goes forward in time. or films that are based in the future. The time zones go in chronological order. This follow a order.

non linear - is where a film don't go in chronological order, or in other ways where the narrative doesn't follow the direct causality pattern of the events featured, such as parallel distinctive plot lines,in i. They have this paper for magazine who are in the future and comic books.

Open narratives-
An Open Narrative structure is usually found in television series, in particular, ongoing soap operas such as EastEnders/Neighbours. In these narratives, the story has no apparent beginning, middle or end.An idea or feeling that a word invokes for a person in addition to its literal or primary meaning. In soaps this is known as on going, story line or to a closure. or crreating a clif hanger to an audience. The soap carried on and this creates the cliff hanger. THis can happen in films as well when the directors want to film sequesl of the film. This is due to the film popularaty and how many sales the film makes. The advantage of this is that it carries on the story which people will want to watch. However the disavatnage of this is that people can forget about the storyline or the actors after some time. For example they have open narratives in eastenders for the sotryline. In print they use open narratives for comic books. They use this to carry on the storylne so they use this for print publication. Cartoon series in newspaper as serial as well on on going biographies are many forms of open narrative in print publication. Also Batman has an an open narratives and also would be another example of an open narrative

A Closed Narrative structure is most commonly found in movies. As mentioned before, movies generally exist as one unique story, and contain a beginning, middle and an ending. In soaps they use this to have a ending to a storyline. Soaps have this since they have to start new storyline to keep the viewers interested. the more new story lines the viewers can be interested than they'll be increasing. Also this will increase the viewers. Films have closed narratives so that wont be known that there would be another sequels to the film. They have closed narratives such as one of stories. so for magazine having articles would be a closed narratives. This is because they don't carry on and dont go on for a long time.  For example in coronation street as they have one basic storyline and keep on going on.

realismThe attitude or practice of accepting a situation as it is and being prepared to deal with it accordingly: "a new mood of realism"
realist - a philosopher who believes that universals are real and exist independently of anyone thinking of them. They refer to the subject objects as they are considered in third persons. Also in realism storyline in the soaps to explore real issue to the viewers. They would realism articles in the magazine to describe the article. For example in eastenders they have realism storyline for the viewers to explain real life issue that people would relate to. In print they have this to  such as articles to help the viewers understand or they can relate to. In eastenders they have a realism storyline of a girls alcohol storylien. This shows realism and man people can realte to drinking a certain amount.

series -A number of things, events, or people of a similar kind or related nature coming one after another: "a series of lectures". Get grouped into season. An example of this would be waterlood road. this is when they start and stop again. This happens due to how views are going to watch the programme. They have magazine of series so they spread the article and stories as much as they can. They have a series of magazine to explore different stories.

serialA story or play appearing in regular installments on television or radio or in a magazine or newspaper. For example in eastenders storyline. Since they go on for a long time. Magazine have this for a series. They have long story lines so soaps have this to get the viewer interested in the storyline.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDwXXTRf9og - This is an example of eastenders serial. SInce this stroyline of laurens drinking habbit
This is an example of a newspaper of having a serial of different stories

SignsAn object, quality, or event whose presence or occurrence indicates the probable presence or occurrence of something else. soaps have this to give a sign on whats going on in the storyline. Newspapers have signs as well for their companies of indicate on whats going on.  An example of signs is in the soap is coronation street- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3S3_juypoc

 signification -
Sufficiently great or important to be worthy of attention; noteworthy, Having a particular meaning; indicative of something. Soaps have signification such as pubs and parks knowing what is significant to the soap. The newspaper has this such as logo or something that is significant. This what makes the newspaper to what it is.  In eastenders they have he pub and other props which make the soaps distinctive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0t6c1p-F8m0
THis is an example of the magazine of what is signification to them

single strand - ingle-stranded (having a single strand) single-stranded and multi strand. An example of this would be Batman since the story is mainly based on him. Also he is the main character. This focuses on him and his lifestyles in the storyline. Also another one would be dates; a channel 4 documentary. This shows the implication and the interact on dates. Also in soaps they have this because they have more than one storyline

Multi-strand - the soaps in eastenders have on going storyline. This would be an example of this. Soaps have this for on going storyline. They have this to carry on the storyline. Newspaper have this because they have newspaper they have on going newspapers.

This is an example of a multi strand since they have more than one storyline.

Anti realist - anti-realism is used to describe any position involving either the denial of an objective reality or the denial that verification-transcendent statements are either true or false. An example of this is that in this video of OASIS which is being over exxageration. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tpMcyda86I.The advert clearly advertisal story high rubber duck than can move and intimaidate parent is not realism.   There isn't a 5  story robber duck so it shows that the advert is anti realism. Its showing an exaggeration in the advert with the 5 story rubber duck and the strict parent. .In print this would be example of  an anti realism since its not inreality. Its someone one idea of a fantasy.

Economic reason in audio visual

Budgets for soaps hav changed dramatically over the last half century. When corontation first started decemeber 6 1960 the budget was a fraction of that enjoyed by the team today as a new programme which had to build ratings it began a modest drama budget and this is creatively visible when looking at the stylist aspect in the programme. Camera set up and sets and other Mises- en-scene elements are all very basics. For example the simple grip gear used results in wobbly tracking shots. Title sequence use still images and are again very basic. Jumping today where the soap wise for eastenders for the as the permanent soap drama in the UK. Coronation street have built up a a loyal and sizeable viewershio and the high rating it receives mean that advertisers can be charged more money for slots in and around the programme. and for coronation street this translate in the significant budget for per programee. just to look at the opening title sequence with its crane shots and CGI and other effect we can see the consequence the budget increase when comparing it to the 1960's epsidoes. sets today are more eleabratly and streets have increased. Looking at the advances of technology it shows that the more budget the set can have have the more dramatic scenes and location they can perform. This would increase the rating of the programme due to more people finding the dramatic scene's interested. That the reason why the production team should get more of the budget to help improve the location and the dramatic scene and miese - en scene.

Task 1
Stunts and complex physical action aren’t often in soaps, especially in
daytime serials. Such story events often take place offscreen and are referred
to in dialogue instead of being shown. This is because stunts or action scenes
are difficult to adequately depict visually without complex action, multiple
takes, and post production editing. When episodes were broadcast live, post
production work was impossible. Though all serials have long switched to being
taped, extensive post production work and multiple takes, while possible, are
not feasible due to the tight taping schedules and low budgets.

Some soaps employ a number of conventions, and many researchers have attempted to list
some of the typical characteristics. e.g. , Sonia Livingstone [1990 : 54]
believes the common soap opera features include :
transmission at regular,
frequent times, often daily; predominantly aimed at female viewers , occupying
day-time/early evening slots; use of fairly constant and large cast, over many
years, and a faithful audience; cheap production costs, regarded as low
prestige entertainment; concern with daily activities, centred on a small
community and/or large family; simulation of real time and realistic events;
interwoven narratives, with overlapping resolutions; 'cliff-hangers' to ensure
committed viewing; focus on female characters and 'feminine' or domestic
concerns. to give further dimension to these characteristic features, one
should also consider Brown's list [cited in Fiske, 1987 : 179/80] : resists
narrative closure; multiple characters and plots; abrupt segmentation between
parts; emphasis on dialogue, problem solving and intimate conversation; male
characters are generally 'sensitive men'; female characters who are often
professional or otherwise powerful in the world outside the home; the home, or
some place that functions as a home, as the setting for the show.

Task 2

Eastenders had to cut down to 16 actors per episode because of the recession
which caused them to cut down the amount of actors acting in one episode and to
also had to let such actors leave like Sid Owen, who plays Ricky Butcher, and
Danniella Westbrook, better known as Sam Mitchell. They have saved from this,
the savings, including a freeze on executive pay and reduced fees for the
biggest stars, followed 7,200 job cuts over the previous four-and-a-half years.
The annual budget for EastEnders remains a closely guarded secret.

Task 3
The  BBC spent an amount of £102.5m last year on six TV soaps – including
EastEnders, Casualty, Holby City and Doctors  which they then drop 20% of
overall in real terms in the past eight years.

task 4

The show eastenders,
got £700,000 on their anniversary half-hour show that was live which happened
last year.
The corporation bosses have an extra million pound which was over
and above costs which was needed to fund the 25th anniversary programme.

The figures reveal in a report by the National Audit Office (NAO) into the way the
BBC manages the costs of a continuing drama, also this shows the Eastenders
soap will spend around £7 million on cast this year. this information shows the
amount spent on the soap is increasing.

The cost of six key dramas, like
EastEnders and Casualty, has reduced by a fifth in real terms over the past
eight years.

With the audience declining, the NAO study shows that the cost
per viewers from the six programmes had actually risen by 9% in actual terms
over the same time of periods.

Task 5
As the recession is hitting ITV,the Sun reports today that coronation street cast are getting a pay cuts.

The sun says Coronation street recieved letters recently before Christmas saying the saturday soap omnibus would be moved directly from ITV 1 to ITV as of this weekend.

The Coronation Street  cast members are currently paid the same fee, which is 37.5 per cent of their episode pay, for showing in the omnibus. Although with the show moving to digital channel, actors would be forced to pay a small royalty fee instead.

Last night the cast members and representatives from their union Equity held talks with ITV accountants.

Coronation Street spokeswoman Alison Sinclair confirmed discussions had begun. She told TV Biz: "We are in the process of talking to cast members whose pay may be affected by the ending of the omnibus repeat on ITV1. We expect to come to an arrangement in the next few weeks. In the meantime we have confirmed that we will continue with repeat fee payments."

Changes in style and content

Cultual changes in soaps

Cultural changes in soaps.

1. How has britain culture changes in the last quarter of a century?

How celebrities are portrayed in the Media whereas a few years ago The Royal Family were the celebrities. Now there are shows that make people celebrities such as big brother, x factor. For the example the monarchy’s ‘fame’ has been pushed to the side whereas they used to take up 4-10 pages in the newspaper. Also there has been a rise of culture groups such as race, homosexuality, race and origin. In the last 25 years there has also been a growing support for groups such as disabilities, gender, age, sexual orientation

Culture – the way of life, especially the general customs and beliefs, of a particular group of people at a particular time.
2. If britain is now multi cultured society how do we see this in soaps?
  • Multicultural society in soaps are stereotypical. Soaps show different cultures in a stereotypical way.
  • In coronation street there are the Alahan family plus a few extra actors. They show Asian life in a stereotypical way as 'Dev' owns the corner shop. In soaps sub-cultures are used which represent multicultural society.
  • In Eastenders there are the Masood, Johnsons and Khan families. These are representing asian/black culture.
  • In soaps sub-cultures are used which represent multicultural society.
<><><><><></> </></></></> <><><><><></> </></></></> <><><><><></></></></></>
Steroetypical 'Emo'
Subcultures include;
  1. Emo
  2. Dark culture
  3. Grunger
  4. Hip-hop
  5. Rave
  6. Rude boy
  7. Skater
  8. ethnic
  9. Sexuality
  10. Political
This is a long list of subcultures. There are many more. Sometimes these are also seen as human stereotypes. In the video link below it shows a stereotypical 'chav' having a fight. Whitney stands up for herself which shows no sign of weakness. The steroetype 'chav' stands for council house aggresive and violent.

In this next video clip from Eastenders, Syed Masood admits that he is gay. This is a big conflict for the family. This is because they don’t believe as a culture that being homosexual is a right choice in life and they believe everything should happen in a certain way. The big argument is caused by this conflict. This is an example of cultures not agreeing with the same thing as so as a result of this syed doesn’t want to play by the rules of his culture as he didn’t choose this way of life.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/watchdogs-accuse-soap-operas-of-failing-to-portray-britain-as-a-multicultural-society-739013.html
According to this report 'watchdog' feel that different cultures arent well represented in soap operas anymore. They say "Soap operas such as Coronation Street and EastEnders are criticised in the report by the Broadcasting Standards Commission."

3. Do minority culture feel as represented in soaps as majority cultures?

Television fails to reflect the multicultural nature of Britain, presenting ethnic minorities as two-dimensional characters, according to a report.
Point:

  • .yes i think minority culture are represented in soaps like Eastenders, coronation st. and hollyoaks as majority cultures.
  • Like in radio , when con side the issue  of representing of minority ethnic groups on television, generally, most groups focused on primally on their own community or  on related communities.
  • ]people who participate in all the minority ethnic groups interviewed considered their groups was under-represented, although
  • Participants in all the minority ethnic groups interviewed considered their group was under-represented, although the Black participants and those from the Indian sub-continent acknowledged that the levels of representation of their communities have increased over the last few years.
  •  In fact, the latest snapshot of peak time television output, presented in Appendix 1, shows that there has been an increase in the proportion of programmes, including minority ethnic groups, as well as an increase in the numbers of people portrayed.
  • However, the analysis also shows that this increase was, certainly in 2001, almost totally confined to roles played by Black characters.

4.what impact has the development of other sub-culture (youth culture) had on british soap operas?

statistics shows 7.8% of the population but get only 6.6% of soap parts and 7.5% of factual roles, the Cultural Diversity Network poll found

  • it shows many storyline with many issues about different religion
  • It found that 18.8% of people on sports programmes were from ethnic minorities, with 12.7% in light entertainment roles
  • statistics shows 7.8% of the population but get only 6.6% of soap parts and 7.5% of factual roles, the Cultural Diversity Network poll found
  • it gives a wider story to write about

5.What other culture changes have also had an impact on british soap operas? As Britian has become more multicultural the soaps have also had to adapt to this to make the soap realistic. Being realistic is the main thing a soap needs to achieve in order for it to hit its target audience.

  • "Over two-thirds of independently-owned local shops belong to people whose families are from another country.
  • About 23% of Britain's doctors and 24% of restaurant employees were born in other countries.
  • Curries and Chinese takeaways are as popular as fish and chips.
  • Sol Campbell, Nasser Hussain and Audley Harrison rank among Britain's best sports stars."
When looking at (http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/questions/multiculture.html) i found out how our country became a mulitcultural society. According to their report it was thanks to the romans, saxons, vikings and normans invading britain. They then go on to explain how africans were brought to britain so that they can become slaves or servants.

This is the ratio of immagrants coming into britain in 1992. We can clearly see that britain is slowly becoming a wider muliticultured society. Each bar represents a different culture or country.

This is the rising amount of immagrants in 2008. By looking at these two statistics we can see the reason why soaps would have to adapt to their audience. There is a considerable amount more cultures mixing into the british culture. I recieved these charts off the Guardian website.(http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2010/jun/26/non-eu-immigration-uk-statistics)

The cultural identitiy in the soap

Cultural identity is the identity of a group or culture, or of an individual as far as one is influenced by one's belonging to a group or culture.

the stroyline was about how a men was trying to attempt to attack a women. The storyline was in the 1980's and is trying to explore controverial storylines. They are showing more family related issues such as domestic violence, rape and other type of abuse. This video starts to bring out other races of people than just a typical white race people. In this soap you see the technology has not been advance yet at they are now. In the 1970's the soaps would be a typical white people. The viewers can see the change over the years. They're religion was mainly christianity.

They were starting explore different storyline but still haven't been able to explain more recent stryline as they are now in the 20th century.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m0s-SOUtl0
This storyline explores a controversial issue of a muslim male revealing his sexuality. These storyline is exploring. There are a lot more ethnic group as they were before since they never was represented before.

To what it used to be in the British Culture there were less multi culture, it was just a whitish british establishment. This is reflected in the cast of the older era episode of the soaps which are universally white (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6CkMDAsLGY) This link shows the rule of law in the scene and how people were kept in line a fear, apprehension for law and order is reflect the way the shop keeper talk to the investigation team they respect the laws in the 1960's. This shows how people were reflected at those times. There wasn't many ethnicity gorup. It was just White establishment and was only them. They had changed so much over the year in this respect. With a very distinct class system not much ethnicity group in the population the British had  Minimal representation of that groups of them in the media.
